Where to stay
in Urbino
Inside the walls or outside town: what actually changes
In Urbino the real question
is inside or outside the walls
Urbino is a walled city built across two hills and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The old town is almost entirely pedestrian and its streets are steep: anyone arriving by car soon discovers the question is not finding a room, it is where to leave the car and how much climbing they are willing to do each time they come back.
So the real choice is not between one property and another, but between two different ways of spending your stay. Below are the concrete differences — including the cases where staying in the centre is the right call and we are not.
Old town or countryside
| Inside the walls | Outside town | |
|---|---|---|
| Museums on foot | Yes, everything within walking distance | You need the car, 5 minutes |
| Parking | Public car parks, paid | Private and free, at the door |
| Slopes | Plenty — the centre sits on two hills | None |
| Quiet in the evening | A university town, with evening life | Woodland |
| Travelling with a dog | Little outdoor space | Private footpaths |
| If you come for one night | You hunt for parking, then walk uphill with your luggage | You park at your room and reach the Ducal Palace in five minutes |
Even for a single night: you arrive, leave the car right outside your room with no parking to hunt for, and you are at the Ducal Palace in five minutes. In the evening, instead of city noise, there is the woodland — and the SPA open to ease the day's climbing.
Three and a half kilometres,
five minutes
Colleverde is a fifteen-room country house in a 1908 farmhouse, restored by the Cangiotti family, from Urbino for twenty generations. It stands in the Tufo hamlet, 3.4 km from the old town: five minutes by car, on open road and with no climbing on foot.
Around it are ten hectares of private woodland, with footpaths starting at the door. Parking is private and free. Inside there is a wellness centre with a whirlpool pool facing the woods: after a day of museums and steep streets, that is why many choose to stay out of town.
How far things actually are
Ducal Palace
3.4 km · 5 minutes by car. The National Gallery of the Marche is inside it.
Raphael's birthplace
In the old town, a short walk from the Ducal Palace.
The woodland
Zero. Ten hectares of our own: the paths start at the property.
Montefeltro
San Leo, Sasso Simone e Simoncello, the Furlo Gorge: all day trips.
The season changes the city
Urbino is a university town: during term time it is lively and full of students, in summer it empties and belongs to visitors. In spring and early autumn the Montefeltro is at its best for walking, and the days are long enough to combine museums and trails.
For absolute quiet, the countryside is finest between May and June and between September and October. In winter the woodland changes colour and the SPA becomes the centre of the day.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to stay inside Urbino's walls or outside town?
From outside town you reach everything faster. The old centre is almost entirely pedestrian and built across two hills: staying inside the walls means paid public car parks and then the climb on foot, luggage included. With us you leave the car free, right outside your room, and you are at the Ducal Palace in five minutes. That holds for a long stay and for a single night alike.
How far is Colleverde from the old town of Urbino?
3.4 kilometres, about five minutes by car, on open road. The Ducal Palace with the National Gallery of the Marche and Raphael's birthplace are both in the old town.
Is there parking?
Yes, private and free, right at the property. In central Urbino you park in paid public car parks, and the centre is almost entirely pedestrian.
Can I stay in Urbino with a dog?
